Due to the overwhelming response to the Little Grand Canyon Marathon, we are unable to comfortably accommodate everyone at the Huntington State Park. We have moved our official meeting place to the Huntington City Park. Huntington City Park is on the corner of Main Street and Center Street in Huntington, Utah (this is on the main Highway (hwy 10) from Price to Huntington, only a couple of miles south of the State Park). This park is the only park on the highway in the small town of Huntington. We will post signs along the road and have maps on this web site that will help runners find their way from all the major cities surrounding the area. About Us The Little Grand Canyon Marathon is made possible by Mammoth Marathons. We are a Non-Profit Organization made up of three race directors and many volunteers. The SUN center, CEU Prehistoric Museum, Carbon and Emery Counties have come together to assist us in offering this run through the historic timetable known as the Little Grand Canyon. The Little Grand Canyon Marathon, Half Marathon and 10K are all USATF Certified. The official times will be posted after the race. To view the certifications click here. Date Saturday, September 11, 2010 Event Details This is the only Marathon and Half Marathon where you get to run through the Little Grand Canyon in Eastern Utah and see some of the most pristine scenery in the world. This area is also known as the San Rafael Swell or BuckHorn Wash. These towering Red Rocks are not only Majestic but they tell the Geological timetable as you run through the Jurassic, Triassic and Cretaceous Era’s. There are actual dinosaur footprints on the side of the road and you run in front of one of the largest Native American Pictograph Panels in the State(The BuckHorn Panel). Due to this exclusive location and the multiple Paleontological and Archeological vista’s, this is the only run of its kind. This is a limited run and is not for runners that enjoy running in large crowds and in great cities, this is for the scenic-runner that enjoys the tranquility and beauty of running in nature. The course begins at 5,650ft and only has about 235ft of climb in the first four miles. The remaining course is fairly flat with a slight decline until you hit the mouth of BuckHorn Wash (about 16 miles from the start). The remaining course descends about 547ft over the next 10 miles. This is primarily a flat / downhill half-marathon with only gently rolling hills. The beginning of the run starts at an elevation of 5656ft. and descends to an elevation of 5100ft. There is only one access road through the canyon, but it is fairly compacted. This is going to be one of the faster and most scenic 10K’s around. Runners will descend through the most scenic part of the canyon. This route is going to be along the last 6.2 miles of the marathon and half marathon course. Awards Each person to complete the race will receive a custom medallion. Special awards given to the top 3 men and women overall finishers. Packet Pick-up The packet pickup will be 6-9 p.m., Friday night, at the CEU Prehistoric Museum in Price, Utah(2 hour from Salt Lake City; 2 1/2 hours from Grand Junction, CO). Race packets can also be picked up the morning of the race from 5:00 to 6:00 at Huntington City Park.

You may have family or friends drop you off at the starting point, as it is only 2 miles from the city park. However, there are to be no cars parked at the starting point and we are trying to limit the number of cars in the area to relieve any unnecessary congestion. After the Race: Due to the exclusive location of the race and to avoid congestion, we will need to bus runners back from the finish to Huntington City Park. We will send the busses back as they fill up when runners finish. There will still be runners on the course when the first buses depart back to the park where we will have an awards ceremony and lunch. The Lunch tickets will be in the race packets for those who signed up during registration. Port a-Potties: There will port a-potties at the starting point of each race and at every water station. The BLM also has permanent toilets at the finish line, buckhorn panel and other locations throughout the course. We still encourage all runners to utilize the flushing toilets at the park before departing on the bus. Support For the Race: CEU Prehistoric Museum is going to assist us with educational signs that will provide an educational tour of the sights and historic timetables about the area that runners will be entering. They will also assist us with set-up and transportation. Emery County’s Sheriff’s Posse is going to assist with traffic control, Emergency Aid, Directing runners and Safety. Race Weather & Climate The middle of September is excellent weather for the marathon. The average high temperature can range from the high sixties to seventies. With over 150 clear days during the Summer, there is a good chance we will have optimal weather. Fees Marathon $55 Runners will get a free shirt with their registration and an authentic finishing medal after the race. If you would like to change your shirt into a running shirt it will be an additional $5 during the registration process. Timing We are using a timing system that will provide immediate results without runners having to hassle with timing chips. This timing system is also backed up by finishing photos that verify the order and time. Unofficial times will be printed periodically at the finish line. Official times will be posted on the web site as soon as possible after the race. Each race is limited to the first 400 entrants. Please avoid race-day registration, we may have room for you, but there is no guarantee of a finishing medal or shirt if you register in the last 3-weeks before the race. The Little Grand Canyon is considered to be one of the hidden treasures of the world and we look forward to seeing you there!
